Big Island Volcano Hikes : Best Hiking Trails

Hiking Trails: A Unique Geological Landscape

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses two active volcanoes: Kīlauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, and Mauna Loa, the world’s most massive shield volcano. Guests looking for Big Island Volcano hikes are in for a treat. The island park contains diverse environments from sea level to the summit of the Earth’s most massive active volcano, Mauna Loa, at 13,679 feet. Within the park, climates can range from lush tropical rainforests to the arid and barren Kaʻū Desert, which sits at the southern end of the park. All of this makes for an unforgettable hiking experience at one of the best hiking trails.

The main entrance to the park is on the Hawaiian Belt Road, where visitors can park at the visitor center and choose from multiple trails that pass through places like ancient eruption sites and across the floor of the Kīlauea caldera.

Hiking Trails For All Skill Levels

Day hiking is a huge draw to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is just less than 5 minutes away from our Big Island bed & breakfast, and is the best way to explore the exceptionally diverse environment.

For easier and shorter hikes, the Crater Rim Trail, Keanakākoʻi Crater, Sulpher Banks Trail, Devastation Trail, Waldron Ledge, and Kīpukapuaulu trails are the best choice. Each one has its own unique views and points of interest like the dramatic views of steam vents and massive craters.

The harder and longer hikes include Maunaulu, the Puʻuloa Petroglyphs, the Halema’uma’u Trail- which provides a panoramic view of the floor of the Kilauea caldera- the Kilauea Iki trail, Thurston Lava tubes, and Byron Ledge trails. These trails may be harder and longer in distance, but they are no less enjoyable and can be even more spectacular in terms of traveling through diverse environments.

For the super adventurous, the national park has eight backcountry camping sites available for a fee.

Know Before You Go

Visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is an amazing addition to any visit to the Big Island, but it’s important to be prepared for any and all conditions. Make sure to stay at boutique hotels in Volcano that’s just minutes away from the park!

If hiking is on the agenda, stay on the marked paths and roads and steer clear of cliffs, cracks, and steam vents as they can be unstable and may collapse. Make sure you’re wearing sturdy close-toed shoes, carry enough water, and wear sun protection regardless of the weather. The environment is truly beautiful, but being prepared will eliminate any bad experiences.

When driving the Crater Rim Trail or Chain of Craters Road stay alert! The vistas are stunning, but some roads can be narrow, speed limits decline in some parts, and the curves may be sharp. And always be aware of pedestrians, other cars, and cyclists.

Most importantly, have fun and take pictures! Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a beautiful and unique place.
