Must-Do Big Island Activities

When you touch down on the Big Island, you’ll be transported to a land of tropical beauty, surrounded by the gorgeous waters of the Pacific Ocean, and enticing honeymoon activities abound.

Comprising 8 of the world’s 13 climate zones, you can venture deep into the rain forest, stand at the edge of jaw-dropping lava fields, snorkel in the clearest of waters, and watch a spectacular sunset from a volcanic crater, all just a short drive or walk from our Hawaii Bed and Breakfast.

Here are some suggestions to add to your Big Island Honeymoon itinerary during your stay.

Couple hiking on Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Our Volcano Bed and Breakfast is at the doorstep of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is vast and awe-inspiring, encompassing over 500 square miles of terrain.

The park’s centerpieces are Mauna Loa and Kilauea, two of the world’s largest and most active volcanoes. An extensive network of roads and trails gives you immediate access to the massive crater of Kilauea, geological marvels like the volcanic steam vents and lava fields, and lush rainforests containing rare birds and animal species.

Hawaii volcanoes waterfalls

Waterfalls

With their steep and rugged contours, Hawaii’s legendary volcanoes channel the plentiful rainfall downward, creating magnificent waterfalls all over the island. Two of the most impressive are just down the road from Volcano, in Hilo.

Akaka Falls is towering at over 400 feet and is an easy half-mile hike from the trailhead. Along the way, you’ll traverse through a rainforest overflowing with giant ferns and native orchids. Rainbow Falls, located right in the town of Hilo, is even more accessible. And if you catch it at the right time in the morning, the bright sun reflects off the cascading water, forming the rainbow that belies its name.

Helicopter Tours

Up the adventure quotient by booking a helicopter tour and heading into the sky. Several nearby outfits offer flights that will take you up and over the expansive crater of Kilauea, circling airborne above its caldera and offering an unmatched view of the world’s most active volcano from high above.

You’ll also see the gorgeous and untouched Kohala coastline, with massive sea cliffs and tucked-away waterfalls.

Volcano Winery

Family-owned for over 30 years, Volcano Winery is renowned for producing unique and delightfully experimental wines.

In addition to classic varietals like pinot noir, which thrives in the cooler climate at 4,000 feet above sea level, they have pioneered wine blends that utilize the abundant tropical fruit in the area, mixing starfruit and guava with traditional grapes.

After sipping their wine as part of our Hawaii honeymoon package, you can visit the winery itself and tour the vineyards, where their grapes flourish in the lava-infused soil.

Akatsuka Orchid Farm

Akatsuka Orchid Farm

Orchids, with their subtle variation in color and exquisite petals, blossom in Volcano’s microclimate. Nowhere is this more powerfully on display than at Akatsuka Orchid Farm, where you can explore rows upon rows of rare tropical plants and their world-famous orchid hybrids, which are the product of a six-year process requiring devotion and utmost care.

These delicate flowers traditionally symbolize love, beauty, and fertility, a sublime expression of your honeymoon bliss.
